1600x1200 reduces to 1200 when dual?

Is there a way to get around this. My old geforce mx/400 will display 1600x1200 with one monitor if I run another even at 800x600 on the second head it wont allow that resolution any more on the main monitor. it is limmited to 1600x1024?
