Guest Ryan
I recently bought my 1st laptop. The HP dv9700z. It currently has a Geforce 8400M GS 256MB. Is this capable of an upgrade? This card seems pitiful to me. (its the DDR2 version)
whitetigerx7
Unfortunately as a HP/Compaq user myself I can tell you right away that HP/Compaq does not use MXM Video Cards in their laptops. The GeForce 8400M GS 256mb should be enough to run anything. The fact it's DDR2 is a minor issue really if even an issue. As a general rule laptops have lower bandwidth, slimmer video pipelines, etc. because everything is geared around power consumption, heat reduction, and a smaller environment. Only a few enthusiast grade laptops even use modular or embedded GPUs with DDR3 RAM and ultra high end equipment such as the 8700M or 8800M chips. HP doesn't place the highest level stuff in their equipment because they want them to be affordable. If you want a higher-end check out their VoodooPC line up.
