MonkeyMhz
I bought myself my first laptop after last christmas, I got a good deal, it was on sale and last one. 1500$ CANADIAN for a LG R500. I bought it because it seemed the best quality, it was fairly light, 17" screen and had a decent graphic card. I switched to laptops because I will be doing 3D Modeling as a job. So I wanna be able to take my PC from home to 3D School/Work/Friends.etc (and i mean take it easily, taking a full blown tower on the bus is not fun, ive done it before). So pretty much im sticking to laptops till I get a really good job, were I can buy a top of the line laptop and desktop. Anyways, so far my lappy has handled 3D flawlessly and every game flawlessly. Until. Crysis, Its the only game I can't max out, so I ended up running it all medium in 1280x720 for good fps with DX10. Then Crysis Warhead came out, big improvement. I run DX9 in Crysis Warhead with 1280x720, Particles, Effects, Post Pro to enthusiast, shaders to gamer, rest to medium. And it gets me a decent 20+ FPS. Even when playing Crysis Warhead at that time I still had the stock drivers the 160 or whatever they were. Just a couple days ago I downloaded and installed the 178.13 and I got the CUDA support Ageia drivers. Another big improvement, I still run in the same settings in Warhead but I now get 23+ FPS. Heres some info: 3DMark06 - Ran it Right When I Got My PC: 3834 Marks 3DMark06 - Ran it Right When I Got the 178.13 Drivers recently: 4023 Marks Btw. I play most my games windowed, I don't know why, it just grew on me. I like it better cuz I have easier access to other stuff or if somone IM's me or something. So All those games you see, I usually play in 1280x720 Windowed or 1440x1050 Windowed. List Of Games (Game - Quality): Bioshock - All Max - 1680x1050 (Ok, but gets a bit slower in big fights). Oblivion - All Max 1680x1050 Runs Great, Tiny Slowdowns on loading area. Rainbow Six Vegas, Rainbow Six Vegas 2 - Both run great maxxed out 1680x1050. Gets a bit slow in fights in RSV2 if I put antialising to level 8. Mass Effect - Suprisingly, All Maxed 1680x1050 very smooth, no slowdowns. COD4 - By far one of the most optimized games, 1680x1050 everything max but no AA. Silky Smooth. WIC - Decent RTS game, it was fun, anyways 1680x1050 all max DX10 got a bit laggy on big explosions, but 1440x1050 worked great. UT3 - 1680x1050 All Max, no problem, smooth. (however, before 178.13 drivers, UT3 in 1680x1050 had very drastic spikes in FPS when moving mouse quickly) Crysis - All Med 1280x720 25+, All High 1024x768 18+. Crysis Warhead - All Med 1280x720 30+, All High 1280x720 20+, Mix of Enthusiast/High/Med 1280x720 23+. GRID - All Max 1280x720, Smooth. My GPU Clocks @ 3D Performance::Not Changed Temps: Idle: 41-51C Normal Gaming/3D: 56-72C Stress/Vantage/Highest: 80-82C Ive never seen my GPU go over 83C, is that good, I know when playing crysis it sits at 78-81C is that ok? Theres a fan on the bottom that blows out and when my laptop is on glass or a flat surface I dont think it helps much, If i place half my laptop off a cardboard box which is what i do when playing games, those temps that are 78-81C when playing crysis never exceed 76-78C, but what temps should I be worried about or with my temps would you still think investing in a cooling pad is a good idea?. My Goal: To get my 8600GT match or get close to the 3DMark Vantage score of a lower end 8800. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ I only Overclocked a tad today, but hell the 8600GT handles temps nice!. 3DMark Vantage Testing (Safe Clocker!): STOCK--------------------------------------- Stock Clocks: Core: 475 Shader: 950 Memory: 600 MAX GPU TEMP: 70C MAX CPU TEMP: 68C Aero: On/Full Drivers: 178.13 Scores: P1315 GPU: 1030 CPU: 7734 OC'1--------------------------------------- Stock Clocks: Core: 500 Shader: 1000 Memory: 600 MAX GPU TEMP: 70C MAX CPU TEMP: 68C Aero: On/Full Drivers: 178.13 Scores: P1362 GPU: 1062 CPU: 8878 OC'2--------------------------------------- Stock Clocks: Core: 525 Shader: 1050 Memory: 632 MAX GPU TEMP: 70C MAX CPU TEMP: 69C (LOL? * Guess less stress on CPU) Aero: On/Full Drivers: 178.13 Scores: P1439 GPU: 1124 CPU: 9097 ============================================ OC'3--------------------------------------- Stock Clocks: Core: 600 Shader: 1200 Memory: 695 MAX GPU TEMP: 71C MAX CPU TEMP: 69C Aero: On/Full Drivers: 178.13 Scores: P1604 GPU: 1256 CPU: 9406 ============================================ Gaming Testing (Safe Clocker!, Crysis Warhead! wook
good luck with that. dont think you will get much higher than 5500 3Dmark 06 score tho. thats what i got with my 8600GT DDR3. overclocked to 600/900. If you are running DDR2 then you most def. wont get higher than that.

Yea mines GDDR3 also, however, ill be testing the scores and comparing them in 3DMark Vantage!, from what I saw a lower end 8800GT will get about P4500 to P3900 Marks in Vantage. Sorry for the doubt but a desktop 8600 GT GDDR3 512mb which is obviously more powerful than your laptop's GPU can barely do the same, 20+ FPS, all high on the stage with ice and aliens flying around, what's more on 1280*720? no way, man, I had to tune it down to 1024*768 on my desktop for a constant 20+ FPS on my desktop

However with crysis warhead even with my settings in the ice levels the FPS does drop but not that much it goes to lows of 15. = ( But on the ice levels i crank the shaders to mainstream and then everything is good. Oh and what CPU do you have, you should be able to play in 1280x720. I don't know if this makes a difference either but my laptop has a 1GB Intel Turbo Card, but I think that only speeds up desktop stuff. coolcop06
okay if your getting pretty good temps, ive done alot of testing and i think you should push your clocks up to 680/1020/1360. as you can see mine are 685/1030/1370. try that you should get some nice scores :) although my stock clocks are 475/702/950, but you can base your clocks off of mine. only thing that will prob me lower would be memory... btw my temps havent gone above 83c on my xps m1530.
