hi i have an inspiron 1720 with 8600m gt.recently i've downloaded 266.58 xp 32bit from nvidia site.everything was working fine but the display blacks out sometimes and doesnt come up until i shutdown for a few minutes.so i uninstalled it and tried some drivers from laptopvideo2go,all of them install fine but the nvidia control panel crashes saying "version mismatch" after right clicking an avi file or simply after a few minutes of bootup.now the pc works fine any no.of hours after the control panel crash,i can watch blurays, play fallout new vegas for hours, but once i restart the screen goes to 640x480 resolution with weird colours and i have to reinstall the drivers and the cycle repeats.

so what i have to do is reinstall drivers after every restart.so what i need is a solution to the nvidia control panel crash for laptopvideo2go driver or a way to disable the lid switch mechanism so that i can use nvidia drivers.please help.

Try a clean install. The nvidia installer even has an option for it now. That will fix the version mismatch.

Also you might need a new backlight if your screen is blacking out.

Every laptop I have ever seen in in the past decade has either a long high voltage tube lamp (usually some kind of fluorescent bulb) or has LED lighting. Maybe your bulb could be going bad, but we need to solve your driver issue first.

Somewhere in the XP power settings is an option to disable the LCD turning off when you close the lid.

Also on the LCD bezel on the laptop, there is usually a magnet that activates a switch when you close the laptop. If you remove this magnet, that will also disable the mechanism.

Have you tried driver cleaners in addition to Nvidia's clean install feature?

Have you tried these drivers?

the "turn off monitor after" works only when the lid is open, when closed it overrides that.the screen doesnt even blink for days with ltv2g driver, but resets after restarting.so i have no problems with gaming or watching movies untill i restart.the screen thing happens only with official driver.isnt there any other way to disable the switch rather than meddling with the laptop?

do you want me to try the official ones or ltv2g ones of the drivers you mentioned?
