Nvidia GPU - VGA and HDMI Ports

I have a Dell E6420 with Windows 10, and unfortunately "optimus" technology does not work properly.  If I have it enabled, I cannot duplicate displays between the laptop and a projector.  Nvidia told me I had to disable "optimus" and then it works fine.  It also means that the laptop only sees the Nvidia GPU and not the Intel HD 3000 GPU.  The issue now is that the VGA port does not seem to automatically detect when a cable is plugged into it.  So, I would like to know if the Nvidia GPU is supposed to handle both the VGA and HDMI ports on tha laptop, or is the Intel HD 3000 GPU required for the VGA port?

Thanks.
