Sometimes 64mb and sometimes 128mb

As I said in the title, I just saw, to my great astonishment, that my driver correctly detected 128mb for my GeForceFX 5600 with the 65.73 hacked inf driver. However, one reboot further and I'm back to 64mb??????????

Now that's weird.

I saw that previously with my official drivers too, but I don't know what it is really.

You may have a faulty RAM module, for it to sometimes be recognised.

It's not the INF, as others with 128MB would also have this.

It seems as if a warm boot (ie a reset from 'Restart Windows' is triggering this.

Does it do it after a cold boot (turning machine off).

The other thing it could be is the Video or System BIOS is at fault, check for any updates from the website (laptop manufacturer)

Either way you'll need to hound your manufacturer/reseller for answers, if it is faulty and your still in warrenty then a new MB may be requiered for your machine.

I agree... It sounds like a faulty RAM chip to me.

Oh :) s***...

Well, the weirdest thing. Yesterday, I tried rebooting (cold and warm) a couple of times and there was no way to get 128mb back, but today, I didn't check it out this morning, but now I'm checking it right now and I have 128mb... And I had one crash yesterday running 3dmark2005 at the insane 1400x1050 resolution. Now maybe the faulty RAM would be a logical explanation...

I'll see if this weird switch is happening with my OEM's provided drivers too and if it does, you can be sure I'll be bugging them, my warranty will end at the end of the year.

Thanks for the tip.

Update:

It seems to have a relation with temperature of GPU.

1. Boot after a night rest. -> 128mb

2. Reboot right after. -> Still 128mb

3. Play a 3D game for ~10 minutes, GPU temp up to ~64 degs, reboot. -> now 64mb

4. Reboot. -> 64mb

5. Cold boot. -> 64mb

See. I'll test with OEM drivers to see if the same phenomena happens. If so, to them it will go!!!!!!!

:) That's interesting.

You're right. Test the OEM drivers and report back.

I just tested them. My OEMs are version 4.4.8.3, now that's a little outdated for an FX isn't it.

It's doing the same thing, when the GPU is warmed up (playing a 3d game for a little while), when I reboot, memory is down to 64mb.

I'm going to send it to RMA dammit...

EDIT

------

OH! And it makes one huge difference in Warcraft 3. Newer drivers allow me to play it at 1400x1050 (native) smoothly while these older drivers have glitches and struggle at this res.

Thats why this Forum and the Website exist :)

Yes send it back, there is defintly something wrong with the Hardware.

The GPU might be buggered, but more likely the memory.

Eitherway a new MB is in order for you.

Make sure they replace with 128MB, it will be just your luck they replace with 64MB version, this has happened before.
