Hello there,

This board will be my last hope for fixing my little gf4 420.

OK...heres the story.

Was watching a dvd on the tv from my lappy whan i knocked the refresh rate off and both screens went blank (i was trying to adjsut the colour but wasnt really paying attention)

So, i tried a F8 boot (safe).......changed refresh rate and rebooted.

Bang....black screen....ok....F8 again and unin stalled nvidia drivers.

Reboot....yay....1024 x 768 ok.

Now.......when i go to display properties and settings all i see is "default monitor on".......thats it........it doesnt mention any gf4 420.

In device manager.....all i have is "vga compatible"...........when i install the latest forceware..........no change...still vga compatible.

ok........installed original tosh driver..bing...gf4 420 ok.............

but still i cannot update the drivers to 61 whatever..............i dont understand.....these were runnign ok before.

have i broken the hardware or is there a problem in my windows installation.

all help appreciated.

Try uninstalling and getting rid of any nvidia driver remains then install the Toshiba ones, if that doesn't work, a reformat might have to be done. :)

Edit: Before you format, wait for other people here to respond.

Have you tried to boot to 'Safe Mode' this should work as it by passes the video drivers.

Form here uninstall the driver and then remove the displays from System properties.

Reboot and install Video driver as normal.

Hopefully you will be back with us with good news.

Well, i have it running on Pieter's recommended 52.16 drivers and 20.55 inf for my machine.

Running good so it must be a deep windows problem.

I dont have time to do a full reinstall now but i will soon.

I cant believ just how serious a problem can look. I know computers real well and this to me looked like a hardware failure. I will keep you posted when i do a full reinstall.

Thanks very much guys...your help was really appreciated.

Consider yourselves bookmarked :)

P.S. I am a regular poster on the UKTech Support message board here. We look after general puter problems. Call round some time............(i am ging)

ciao for now.

I suggest you also clean up the registry entries under HKLM/CurrentControlSet.
