Dell Laptop GF4 4200Go ext. monitor prob

Hi! I have a problem when using a external monitor, and the problem is that the laptop lcd screen does not power off. It shows shadows(lack of better word) in different colors going around. The display on the external is just fine. Using the modified INFs only with the laptop lcd screen works fine. I Have tried these versions so far:

53.03

56.56

56.72

Basically the same problem with each, however the colors seem to be different..

I have a Dell Inspirion 8500, Geforce4 4200 Go, and the external is a 17" Dell LCD TV..The biggest problem is that i really need a Modified INF because dells own does not let me have 1280x768 on the external lcd..Only 1024x768...

Latest bios both for the laptop and Geforce4 4200 Go...

Anybody who knows how to fix it?

To clarify, Dell's own files DO work? (i.e. 56.54 and 61.12 include NVDM.inf -- Dell's own file). It'd be nice to know if Dell's works and Pieter's INF does not. Then a simple registry entry would be affecting it. If it's the case Dell's does work, adding the 1280x768 would not be difficult.

yep you can add 1280x768 in the inf

or post your working inf and get someone to mod it for you

Ok! Clarification:

With dells drivers everything is ok except i cant get 1280x768 on the external lcd

with the others versions (with the infs on this page, liked 56.72 nview had better GUI) the display on the internal LCD was fine and in the external lcd it was ok, BUT when the active display was on the external display the internal lcd did not power off, it went white or red/green.

Clearer???

I dont really follow you suggestions(new to this subject) so have some questions:

If i would like to use DELLs drivers were do change so it can display 1280x768 resolution?

If i want to give 56.54 a try, do i copy NVDM.inf from dells drivers to the 56.54 installation file directory?

Thanks for answering my question(is probably a dummie question)

i have the same problem too

but i cant tell how long it has been happening - well it wasnt turning the lcd off when i closed the screen - so i tried updating to the 56.72 and now i get this shadow issue you were describing is now happening

my guess is since i upgraded to A09 bios or when i unsuccessfully tried the latest batch of omega drivers

i dont know what exactly is happening to cause it - i just dont want to burn out my LCD or backlight w/ this issue

Ok. Now i tried 60.60 driver with NVDM.inf in the archive works just fine, except that it does not let me get 1280x768, not even when i try to add it in nview manager. If i want to use this version what do i need to change to make it work?

NVDM.inf? where and what?

modes.txt? where and what?

registry? where and what?

No changing...

modes.txt will affect nothing.

Yes changing...

NVDM.inf requires a reinstall.

Registry requires a reboot.

You can leave nvdm.inf in the 56.54 directory. It will automatically find this file and install the appropriate settings.

Ok!Still have problem...

1. Downloaded 56.54 and deleted all *.inf files except NVDM.inf, then changed the part you showed. Got 1280x764 on the external monitor, however the internal lcd went WHITE?

2. Dowloaded 60.60 and deleted all *.inf files except NVDM.inf, then changed the part you showed. Did not get 1280x764 on the external monitor(got 1024x768), however when swithcing monitor the internal lcd did power off..

Any suggestions(thanks for your advice so far, right now im clueless)

Maybe those drivers just have bugs in them?

Try some more, after all theres not an entire page full of drivers for no reason. Also, do the official Dell drivers have any problems?

You could mod the inf in those if that resolution is all you want.

The official dell driver has the problem that i cant get 1280x768 on the external lcd screen. And with the others the laptop internal lcd goes white when having single display on the external lcd with 1280x768....

I have tried a couple of them now but if they manage to 1280x768 the screen is white(internal) and if they doesn´t the internal powers down and the external gets only 1024x768(which is stretched)

I´ve tried a couple of different drivers now with the .infs next to them on this page and they do seem to work...

Stupid dell people that cant get their own stuff to work together... :-)
